The City of Hope C31 Tobacco Cessation Program team is committed to building a community of health care providers, researchers, patients and as a priority for health promotion and wellness. It is the fourth pillar of best cancer care, beside surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

City of Hope will support you with proper cessation medications to overcome withdrawal symptoms/cravings, behavioral strategies to break habits that trigger smoking, strategic problem solving and social support to boost your chance of success.

Tobacco Cessation in 6 Steps

1. Determine your reasons for quitting and make up your mind. Be confident that you can take action to quit.

2. Set your quit day and make a plan.

3. Prepare yourself to overcome your tobacco use triggers and habits.

4. Be prepared to fight cravings by using appropriate quit ads and/or medications.

5. Get rid of cigarettes etc. and all smoking reminders to make things clean and fresh.

6. It is ok to seek and receive extra help and support you need to quit.

Walk for Hope

Walk for Hope began in 1997 and is an annual event and peer-to-peer fundraising campaign that has raised over $45 million for City of Hope's Women's Cancer Program. Walk for Hope is the largest public-facing event City of Hope produces.

It takes many people to make a Walk for Hope event happen. Become a part of the team by volunteering at the event. It's fun and rewarding!

Volunteer at the Garden (Garden Club)

Garden of Hope is a volunteer-driven garden supported by internal and external volunteers that make up Garden Club. Garden Club members, also referred to as "garden sprouts", assist with daily garden tasks needed to support the garden's mission. Tasks include watering, propagation, transplanting, community events, and more. The produce that is harvested is distributed among volunteers, patients, the City of Hope cafeteria, and participants of the Savoring Hope Cooking Classes. All are welcomed to participate, and no experience is required. Garden volunteers are led by City of Hope's AmeriCorps fellow and horticulturist.

Prospective volunteers are strongly encouraged to RSVP at least 24 hrs before volunteering. Garden materials will be provided.

COVID-19 Update: Garden volunteering is limited to the COH community until further notice. All volunteers and visitors must weak masks, maintain social distancing, and must be free of symptoms while at City of Hope.

Community Education Volunteers

Are you skilled in any gardening or food preservation topics? Are you interested in community education? In addition to hands-on agriculture, Garden of Hope also seeks to improve communities through its community education events. Garden of Hope seeks volunteer educators to help teach the community on gardening, cooking, and food preservation-related topics. Events are mainly virtual and attended by the City of Hope and City of Duarte community.
